Programme profile

The 2ndcycle degree programme in Mass Media and Politics provides students with advancedand qualified competence and skills,other than analytical and methodological tools for an in-depth understanding of the relationshipbetween media and politics in national and international contexts, the relations between political and socialsystems and mass communication systems, the specific features of the media market, politicalcommunication and public opinion changes.

2nd cyclegraduates have interdisciplinary knowledge and are able to work in technicaland professional roles in public and private bodies, business and tradeassociations operating in thecommunication and information sector and in the media industry.

In additionto Italian, graduates will be fluent in English (written and oral) and otherlanguages, with a specific focus on politicaldiscourse analysis.

For thispurpose, this two-year programme has a multi-disciplinary curriculum aiming atproviding specialized knowledge of the links between thepolitical system and the information systems, focusing on their working, prospectsand problems. Specifically the curriculum covers different learning areas(political science, political communication; sociology of cultural processes,media economics and information law; historical and political analysis),required to develop an understanding of socio-political and institutionalphenomena related to communication in acomparative perspective and within an international perspective, with a focus on contemporary democracies.

In order tomeet and anticipate the job market demand, the programme also offers a specificlearning area (Techniques for mass media communication) including highly specialized course units(Analysis of Political Language, held in English), a laboratory course (AudiovisualProduction) and seminars (Journalism and Politics, Systems for TelevisionProduction, Qualitative Analysis of Communication) that provide students with technical and practicalcompetence about mass media, digitalmedia and their languages. Graduates will be able to find qualified jobs in the political,institutional and mass media communication sectors. The main professionalfigures include: specialists in political communication, digital communicationand audiovisual communication working in political, social and institutionalsectors; consultant for political parties, interest groups, governmentalinstitutions, policy makers; electoral campaigns' organizers; political andsocial affairs and media policy reporter/consultants.

Internship

Thestudy plan in Mass media and politics does not consider the curricularmandatory internship. However, it's possible for any requiring student (subjectto the adequacy of his educational objectives) to have his own application forrecognition of 8 credits (ECTS) acceptedupon to respect of a period of internship (200 hours). Internship can be donein University or extra-university structures, such as organizations, companiesand institutions located in Italy, Europe or extra-Europe, and operating inprofessional fields being of interest for the degree programme.

TheSchool of Political Sciences – Forlì Campus organizes every year the NATO MODELEVENT simulating all the activities required to manage an international crisisand involving students and experts in security as agreed in the Memorandumbetween the School and the Supreme Allied Commander transformation (SACT). MassMedia and Politics students will attend the simulation playing the role ofjournalists and video-operators and makig a promotion clip of the initiative. To extend the cultural offer, the Schoolorganises a number of initiatives and extra-curricular courses throughout theacademic year (conferences, seminars, workshops, presentations of tests,training courses, and films at the cinema) on topics related to the challengesthat modern days pose to political, historical, economic and sociologicalanalysis and reflection.



International mobility

Thesecond cycle degree programme supports the involvement of its students in:

· callsfor international mobility supported by the University of Bologna (Erasmus+ ,Erasmus Mundus, Overseas);

· applicationsfor internships abroad (for example, the Erasmus Placement programme, offeringa 3 months internship in an EU country; the internship will be recognized as acurricular internship - 10 ECTS);

· applicationsfor scholarships to conduct research abroad in order to prepare the master'sthesis;

· internationalstage opportunities sponsored by the School of Political Sciences – ForlìCampus.

Inorder to increase the possibility totake advantage of international exchange projects, the second cycle degreeprogramme has also set up specific mobility agreements with:

-Peoples ' Friendship University of Russia (RUDN) Moscow (exchange programme forstudents at the Master of Journalism);

-New York University (Florence) to attend common training activities both forU.S. students and Mass Media andPolitics students
